供述書によれば、17日の夜に車両後方に座っていたリードは、ペットボトルのキャップを外したうえで26歳の女性に背後から近づき、ガソリンをかけた。女性は車両の後方に逃げたが、リードはボトルに火をつけて女性を追いかけ、女性に火をつけたという。
