25日から始まった米韓合同軍事演習。多くのメディアが、演習が行われる場所を"Sea of Japan"（日本海）と伝えている中、韓国の聯合ニュースによると、21日に採択された共同声明には、"off the east and west coast of the Korean Peninsula" (朝鮮半島の東、及び西側沿岸) という表現が使われたとか。
これに先立つ14日、ジェフ・モレル米国防総省報道官が、訓練計画の発表に際し、"日本海"と説明したことが韓国国民に大きな反発を生んでいた。日本海は東海だ！と主張する韓国。合同訓練をする相手国に対して、配慮の欠ける行為だというのだ。
20日、合同演習の発表を伝えるU.S. Force Koreaからのリリースには,
The Republic of Korea and the United States will conduct a combined alliance maritime and air readiness exercise "Invincible Spirit"in the seas east of the Korean peninsula (朝鮮半島の東海域) from July 25-28, 2010.
そして、米国防総省のニュースリリースは、
"This is the first in a series of [South Korean]-U.S. combined naval exercises that will occur in both the East and West Seas (東海と西海)," the two defense ministers said in their joint statement
やはり配慮ですかね、配慮。
