Subway. New York City. @chivexp @thomashoepker @brix123 I recently received my Super 8mm Kodak Tri-X 7266 Reversal Film test back from the lab. It's not too bad considering I was using an old camera handheld as I stood on the station platform really close to a speeding train to capture this. Keep in mind that this is a single frame of a moving image. I love it, the high contrast and grain is what I hoped for. It's a silent film stock and I processed it as a negative. I'll mix film, both positive and negative as well as digital along with some personal methods of capture that are my own for this project. GHOSTS IN THE MACHINE. My experimental short film set in the New York City subway system. I'm experimenting with various techniques to achieve the overall look for my film. Sound will play an important role in this film, equally if not more important than the visuals in some scenes. Accurately recorded sound doesn't really interest me for this project and won't have much of a presence, the real sounds of the location environments will be distorted so they no longer correspond with the image, along with some scenes in complete silence. Some scenes the visuals will be the most important, other scenes will be driven by the sound or lack of it.

　２つの地下鉄プロジェクトには共通している匂いがある。ヴィジュアル用語でいうダーク、あるいはノワールなのだ。暗い匂いが漂っているのである。リール自身もそれを認め、また意図的に「ざらざら」した感じを捉えようとしていると言う。彼がニューヨークの地下鉄にそう感じる理由をさらに問うと、こう返ってきた。

　ニューヨークは人で溢れかえっている。なのに、インフラは非常に古い。そんな状況の中で地下鉄にいれば、人々は不安や緊張、あるいは閉所恐怖症的な感覚を無意識に発してしまうもの。そうした深層的感情をつかみとるようにしているんだ、と。

　実のところ、そうしたどこかダークで緊張を孕む匂いは、彼の大半の作品に存在している。もう１つ別のプロジェクトである、ネガフィルムを実験的にプリントしたポートレイト・シリーズもそうだ。彼が25年以上かけて作りあげたダークルーム（暗室）テクニックを用いながら、１枚につき何時間もかけてプリントしたものだ。

　写真史におけるプリント・マスターであるマン・レイとアーヴィング・ペンに敬意を表している、と彼は言うが、そこにはリールの感性と彼自身がニューヨークで一体化してきた彼そのものの匂いが根付いている。だからこそ、作品はより魅力的になり、ダークであったとしても情熱を放っているのである。
